Week 3 in review

Barcelona reclaimed top spot from Valencia as they maintained their 100% start to the season with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Villarreal at the Camp Nou. Valencia had taken top spot courtesy of their impressive 2-2 draw away at Atlético, with the Catalan side not playing until Monday evening, but goals from Griezmann and a Messi penalty ensured they would return to the summit. Messi now has 5 goals so far this season, equal with Valencia striker Kevin Gameiro.

Perhaps the most telling result of the weekend was at Granada, where the hosts beat Real Madrid 2-1 to inflict another defeat on the current holders, who have just 3 points so far this season. Toni Kroos had given Los Blancos the lead, but a double from Antonio Puertas gave the hosts victory, a result which sees them occupy fifth. Elsewhere, Levante and Eibar played out a thrilling 4-4 draw, while there where another 6 goals in a 3-3 draw between Getafe and Celta Vigo. Other winners this weekend included Osasuna, winning 2-1 away at Real Sociedad thanks to an injury time winner from Oier, while Athletic Bilbao remain near the top after a 2-1 win away to Cádiz. Valladolid overcame Sevilla 2-1, while Alavés beat Elche 3-2. Real Betis and Huesca claimed their first points of the season in a 1-1 draw the previous evening, which means Celta Vigo now find themselves propping up the table.
