Vallejo rescues Villarreal
On loan attacker Manu Vallejo was once again a stand out performer in the Copa Del Rey as he came off the bench to help his side Villarreal in a 1-1 draw against fellow La Liga side Valladolid, El Submarino Amarillo eventually progressing into the next round following a penalty shoot out. In a game which the home side created the most, neither team could break the deadlock in a frustrating 90 minute affair. 8 minutes into extra time it was Vallejo, who has scored in each of the previous rounds, who played a neat one-two before firing home at the near post to give his side one foot in the next round. The strike, which had Jordi Masip well beaten, was the 8th goal for former Cádiz man Vallejo in the competition.
With just 4 minutes left, Valladolid pulled themselves level with a goal from Sergi Guardiola, meaning the tie would have to be settled on penalties. Former Valencia striker Fabian Orellana stepped up first for the visitors, but failed to score handing advantage to the hosts, who went on to score all 4 of their penalties in the shoot out, including another from Vallejo, before a miss from Javi Sanchez ensured the home side would progress into the next round. With the transfer window currently open, there have been rumours in some parts that Valencia may opt to recall Manu Vallejo, although it is not easy to see where they would find a place for him in their squad at the moment, with all the registration places currently allocated, although any potential further transfers out this January could still see the 23 year old return to his parent club.Share this:
