Week 21 in review
An impressive Sevilla performance on Friday evening got things underway in the latest round of fixtures, as they swept aside struggling Eibar in a very convincing 3-0 win, which sees them move up a spot to 9th in the table. Luuk De Jong opened the scoring after half an hour, with a double from the former Liverpool and Milan striker Suso in the second half compounding the damage for the hosts, who found themselves back at the foot of the table at the end of the weekend.
The Sunday noon game saw Real Madrid, currently second in the table, unable to find a way past a resolute Villarreal defence in a 0-0 draw, 2 crucial points dropped which put a further dent in their hopes to retain the title, although they remain second after Barcelona once again slipped up, this time crashing to a 1-0 defeat away to Real Betis, Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho scoring 7 minutes from time to condemn Barca to their fifth defeat of the season.
There was another 0-0 in the early evening clash between Alavés and Real Sociedad, both sides remaining unchanged in the league table as a result. The Valentines’ day massacre undoubtedly came at the Metropolitano Stadium, where hosts Atlético Madrid picked apart Huesca 6-1, a double from Koke among the goals, while Athletic Bilbao were also among the goals with a 3-0 win at home against Getafe, who were reduced to 10 men. Atlético remain 3rd while Bilboa remain 5th, both sides looking to secure European football for next season. There was nothing to separate Osasuna and Valladolid who played out a 1-1 draw, while honours were also shared as Levante met Cadiz in another 6 pointer, a thrilling 3-3 draw the outcome with a goal for both sides coming in stoppage time, Fali thinking he’d nicked a crucial 3 points for the visitors before an ever later reply from Sebastián Villa ensured a share of the spoils.
The final game Sunday evening saw a slender away win for Granada, claiming a 1-0 victory against Celta Vigo, before Valencia took advantage of both Barcelona and Real Madrid dropping points with their impressive 3-0 victory away to Elche on Monday evening.Share this:
