Week 16 in review
Valencia’s perfect week continued as Barcelona suffered a shock home defeat against Valladolid on Wednesday evening. Still reeling from defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final at the weekend, the Catalan giants hoped to bounce back and maintain pressure on Valencia at the top of the table, but despite having the slightly better of the game, they had no reply to a first half goal from former Benfica man Jota. Their misery was compounded late on with a second booking for former Valencia man Jordi Alba, having to see out the last few minutes of the game with just 10 men. The victory sees Valladolid climb 6 points clear of the drop zone.
The latest round of fixtures began the previous evening, the once again impressive Real Sociedad kicking things off with a 4-1 victory at home to Cádiz, Alexander Isak opening the scoring with his 12th goal of the season in all competitions. The later game saw another shock result, as Atlético Madrid beat neighbours Real Madrid 2-0 in the Madrid derby, former Barcelona striker Luis Suárez with both goals, a result which sees Atlético draw level with their rivals on 31 points after 16 games.
As well as Valencia’s comfortable win against Huesca, the early games Wednesday also saw Getafe claim all 3 points with a 1-0 win against Granada, while Villarreal produced an impressive display to trounce Levante 5-0 in Valencia, with on-loan Valencia striker Manu Vallejo coming off the bench to grab the final goal in that one. As well as Barcelona being handed their first home defeat in 10 games, the other 8 PM game saw nothing to split the 2 sides as Osasuna and Alavés played out a goalless draw.
Athletic Bilbao were another big winner of the week, moving up into 3rd place in the table after a dominant 5-1 win over Sevilla, a hat-trick from Iñaki Williams helping the hosts on their way, while Sevilla defender Jules Koundé also found the net at both ends, an own goal in the first half before grabbing a consolation for his side on the hour. It was a tighter affair back in Sevilla, as Real Betis nicked a 1-0 win against bottom club Eibar. The final game saw Celta Vigo move above Elche following a 3-1 victory, another 2 goals for Santi Mina who now has 10 for the season.Share this:
